Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a highly aggressive malignant disease that usually affects the brain, with or without leptomeningeal disease. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the use of ultrasound (US) improves the diagnosis of PCNSL compared with the routine computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain. We prospectively evaluated 26 consecutive patients (13 males, 13 females) with a diagnosis of PCNSL confirmed by histopathology. All patients were evaluated with the CT scan of the brain before starting the treatment and with the US scan of the brain after it was completed. The CT scan was analysed by one observer and the US study was performed by an independent sonographer. The results were evaluated in two independent sessions. The initial CT scan was positive for the diagnosis of PCNSL in 20 patients and negative in 6. In the case of the US scan, there was a positive diagnosis in all patients. Only two patients had a negative US scan of the brain. US was found to be a useful and more accurate diagnostic tool for PCNSL.Current electronic imaging technologies such as electronic still and video cameras are being integrated into integrated circuits.
